faq

questions about the ysws

do i need good art to qualify?

No! Programmer art is completely okay. The game just needs to be readable, playable in a browser, and feel good as a short arcade experience.

Go ham and have fun making it!

what kinds of games fit best?

Fast arcade formats work best: score chasers, tiny platformers, reaction games, racers, shooters, and small puzzle loops with a clear ending state.

You can browse our gallery below for inspo!

can i remix an existing game?

Yes!!! You definitely can. In fact, if you don't have your own idea yet- we encourage it. The Flappy Bird at the top is a remix of the iconic game... you guessed it... Flappy Bird!

how short does the game need to be?

A full run should finish in under three minutes, or the game should loop cleanly within that window so players can jump in and replay quickly.

If the game 'levels up' (ie. difficulty increases) - that counts too!

what tools or engines can i use?

Anything that ships in the browser is fair game, including plain html5, godot web export, pico-8, and other browser-ready stacks.

Don't know how to get started? Check out our guides!

how are the top games chosen?

The top three games are based on plays. Re-plays don't count!

what if i want to make an infinite game?

That's okay! We recommend adding a Time Limit and a score competition. Gotta get the most within the timeframe - think Tetris!
